ASICS road lineup

Seven roles cover the ASICS road range in 2026. Most runners need two or three of them, not seven — the confusion lives at the top, where the Nimbus, Novablast and Superblast all cover easy days and long runs.

  1. 1

    Comfort-first daily trainer

    Gel-Nimbus 28

    281g · 8mm drop · 44mm stack

    ASICS Gel-Nimbus 28

ASICS builds the Nimbus around comfort over longer distances, and it is the shoe in this range aimed squarely at easy mileage. Whether it is 'the softest' is not something the specs settle — treat it as the comfort-first choice, not a proven ranking.

    Choose it if

    • Most of your week is easy running
    • You want comfort as the first priority
    • You are on your feet all day

    Skip it if

    • You want one shoe that also handles tempo
    • You prefer a firm, connected ride

Also consider Novablast 6, Gel-Cumulus 28 and Megablast.

Overlap · The Nimbus, Novablast and Superblast all cover easy days and long runs. Wanting more cushioning is not by itself a reason to own a second one.

  2. 2

    Lively everyday default

    Novablast 6

    257g · 8mm drop

    ASICS Novablast 6

FF BLAST MAX with a forefoot pod makes this the liveliest of the everyday trainers, and at $155 it is the one to start with if you are buying a single ASICS road shoe. That it suits most runners is our judgement, not a manufacturer claim.

    Choose it if

    • You want a single shoe for most of your running
    • You like a lively, springy ride

    Skip it if

    • You need stability
    • You want comfort as the first priority

    Also consider Gel-Nimbus 28, Superblast 3 and Gel-Cumulus 28.

  3. 3

    Stability daily trainer

    Gel-Kayano 33

    300g · 8mm drop

    ASICS Gel-Kayano 33

ASICS' structured daily shoe. Support comes from midsole geometry rather than a posted wedge, so it reads as a cushioned trainer that happens to hold you upright.

    Choose it if

    • You want support without a corrective feel
    • Your form drifts late in long runs

    Skip it if

    • You run neutral and want the lightest option

    Also consider GT-2000 15, GT-1000 15 and GT-4000 4.

Overlap · ASICS now runs a four-shoe stability ladder. GT-1000 15 is $115 and 278g, GT-2000 15 $160 and 258g, GT-4000 4 $140 and 307g with the widest base, Kayano 33 $180 and 298g. Cheaper and lighter is not proof of less support — the GT shoes use a posted medial side, the Kayano uses geometry. Try both feels before paying up.

  4. 4

    Premium distance cushioning

    Superblast 3

    239g · 8mm drop · 47mm stack

    ASICS Superblast 3

46.5mm of heel stack, unplated, at 239g — ASICS builds it for distance, and it is the trainer you reach for when the run is long. At $210 it is a $55 step up from the Novablast, which is the honest question to ask before buying it.

    Choose it if

    • Your long runs are over 90 minutes
    • You want race-day cushioning you can train in

    Skip it if

    • You want a plated race shoe
    • The Novablast already covers your long runs

Also consider Megablast, Glideride Max 2 and Novablast 6.

Overlap · Megablast ($225) and Glideride Max 2 ($170) are different takes on the same job — Megablast more cushioning, Glideride a rockered EVA-plate ride. We have no comparative ride evidence to rank them, so pick on price and feel.

  5. 5

    Workouts and affordable plated racing

    Magic Speed 5

    196g · 7mm drop · 37mm stack

    ASICS Magic Speed 5

Carbon-plated at 196g and $180, and ASICS recommends it for both training and racing. It is the shoe that covers hard sessions and race day without a second $270 purchase — the plated shoe most runners actually need.

    Choose it if

    • You do one hard session a week
    • You want one plated shoe for workouts and races

    Skip it if

    • You want the fastest possible marathon shoe
    • You want an easy-day shoe

Also consider Sonicblast 2, Metaspeed Sky Tokyo and Evoride Speed 2.

Overlap · Evoride Speed 2 does the same weekly session unplated, at $130 and 230g. Take it if you want the workout shoe without paying for carbon; take the Magic Speed if you also want to race in it.

  6. 6

    Affordable speed and racing

    Hyper Speed 6

    220g · 6mm drop

    ASICS Hyper Speed 6

ASICS designs the Hyper Speed for quicker training and racing, at 220g and $110. It is the accessible way into fast running — a fraction of the price of the plated shoes, and enough shoe for 5 km and 10 km.

    Choose it if

    • You want to race short without spending $200+
    • You want a light shoe for intervals

    Skip it if

    • You are chasing maximum race performance
    • You want cushioning past an hour

Also consider Metasleek and Magic Speed 5.

Overlap · Metasleek ($225, 129g) is the specialist alternative: ASICS positions it as low-assistance speed training, not as a faster racer. Lighter and pricier does not mean quicker.

  7. 7

    Marathon race day

    Metaspeed Sky Tokyo

    173g · 5mm drop · 40mm stack

    ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo

ASICS splits its marathon racers by how you find speed: the Sky suits runners who lengthen their stride, the Edge those who also raise cadence. We lead with the Sky because it suits more runners, but this is a choice between two shoes, not a single answer.

    Choose it if

    • You are racing a marathon
    • Your stride lengthens as you speed up

    Skip it if

    • You want a shoe that lasts a training block
    • You raise cadence as well as stride — take the Edge

Also consider Metaspeed Edge Tokyo, Metaspeed Ray and Magic Speed 5.

Overlap · Edge Tokyo is the same price and the same race, for a different runner. Ray ($300) is a specialist lightweight option, not an upgrade.

Suggested rotations

One shoe

Novablast 6 + Gel-Nimbus 28

If you buy one ASICS road shoe, the Novablast covers the most ground. Take the Nimbus instead if comfort matters more than liveliness.

Two shoes, most runners

Novablast 6 + Magic Speed 5

Everything easy in the Novablast, hard sessions and races in the Magic Speed. This is enough for most people.

Three shoes, marathon block

Gel-Nimbus 28 + Superblast 3 + Metaspeed Sky Tokyo

Easy days comfortable, long efforts cushioned, race day plated.

Not in this lineup

  • Gel-Contend 10 Entry price point, not a running-specialist model.
  • Gel-Excite 11 Entry price point; the Cumulus is the cheapest shoe we would recommend for running.
  • Noosa Tri 16 Triathlon-specific fit and drainage; a different buying decision.
  • Dynablast 6 The $120 budget daily trainer. A cheaper route to the same job as the Novablast, not a different job.
  • Versablast 4 The $80 budget daily trainer, same reasoning as the Dynablast.
  • Nimbus Mirai 2 Its recycling and return proposition is real, but at $180 it does not need a role of its own beside the Nimbus 28.
  • Gel-Pulse 17 The $105 budget daily trainer. Same job as the Cumulus, less shoe.
  • Patriot 14 $65 and 22mm of stack. An entry shoe, not a running-specialist model.
  • Bloomstride A women's-only bio-based model with no men's counterpart; it covers the same daily job as the Cumulus.
  • Metaspeed Sky The pre-Tokyo Metaspeed Sky. Sky Tokyo is the current marathon racer in this range.
