Door-to-trail

Nike calls the ACG Pegasus Trail a trail shoe with the responsiveness you know from the road. It has a ReactX midsole with a 39mm heel and an 8mm drop, and an ATC rubber outsole for wet ground. Believe in the Run rates it best for road-to-trail and light terrain: it moves easily from pavement to dirt, and the outsole held well on rocks and roots. It gives up protection and grip on rough ground: the foam is soft, you feel rocks, and the lugs are shallow.

ACG Pegasus Trail and Wildhorse 10 both cover daily trail miles. The Pegasus Trail is $155 with an 8mm drop and is the better shoe on the road; Nike aims the Wildhorse 10 at tougher trails, with a 9.5mm drop at $165.

Waterproof / winter

The ACG Pegasus Trail GORE-TEX is the Pegasus Trail with a waterproof GORE-TEX upper. It keeps the ReactX midsole, the ATC outsole for wet ground and the wider forefoot, at 303g with an 8mm drop. It is the pick for rain, puddles and cold days from the door. It gives up price and airflow: it is $175 against $155 for the dry shoe, and a waterproof upper is warmer on dry, hot days.

ACG Pegasus Trail GORE-TEX and ACG Pegasus Trail are the same shoe for different weather. The GORE-TEX is waterproof at $175; the dry shoe is $155 and breathes better.

Daily trail trainer

Nike sells the Wildhorse 10 for your favourite trail and for more technical routes. It has a ReactX midsole and Nike's Trail ATC rubber outsole, which Nike says grips on steep climbs and in the wet and still runs smoothly on the road. It is the daily trail shoe for ground that is rougher than the Pegasus Trail likes. It gives up weight and drop: it is 311g with a 9.5mm drop, and it has no rock plate.

Wildhorse 10 and Kiger 10 both go onto technical trail. The Wildhorse 10 has more drop (9.5mm) and a ReactX midsole for daily miles; the Kiger 10 is lighter at 276.5g, lower at 5mm, and adds a Vibram outsole and a rock shield.

  • You run most days on real trail, not gravel paths
  • You like a higher drop: at 9.5mm it is the highest in the lineup

Cushioned long trail

Nike calls the ACG Zegama Trail light and ultra-cushioned, for steep climbs, switchbacks and fast descents. ZoomX foam sits over a layer of Cushlon foam, on a Vibram Megagrip outsole with Traction Lugs. The forefoot and toe box are roomier, and a stretch ankle cuff keeps trail debris out. It has a 38mm heel and a 4mm drop. It gives up weight: at 338g it is the heaviest shoe in the lineup.

ACG Zegama Trail and ACG Ultrafly Trail both use ZoomX for long distances. The Zegama is the $180 training shoe with no plate; the Ultrafly adds a carbon plate for race day and costs more.

  • You want a low 4mm drop with a lot of foam under you

Technical trail

Nike says the Kiger 10 is one of the lightest trail shoes it has made, with a low profile that Nike builds for technical trails. It has a Cushlon midsole, a forefoot rock shield and a Vibram Megagrip outsole with widely spaced lugs. It weighs 276.5g with a 5mm drop, the lightest shoe in the lineup. It gives up cushion: it is a low shoe for technical ground, not for long, slow days.

Ultra race

The ACG Ultrafly Trail is Nike's trail racing shoe for long distances. It puts ZoomX foam over a full-length carbon plate, which Nike made less stiff than the first Ultrafly for more control on the trail, on a Vibram Megagrip outsole. The upper drains water. It weighs 287g with an 8.5mm drop and a 37mm heel. It gives up price: it is $260, and the ACG Zegama Trail is $180.
