Best for	Long and ultra-distance days on technical terrain where maximum underfoot protection and grip matter more than speed.	Long, rugged trail days and ultra-distance efforts where cushioning and Vibram Megagrip traction protect the legs over hours on rough ground.
Avoid if	You want a light, responsive shoe or run mostly short, fast efforts.	You want a low, connected feel for fast or precise footwork, or you need a wide fit — the tall soft stack and standard-only width work against both.

These are the same shoe in different fits: the HOKA Mafate 5 and the Mafate 5 Women's both deliver max cushion, 8 mm drop, and Vibram grip for long and ultra-distance days on technical trail. Pick based on fit rather than performance, and skip either if you want a lighter, more connected shoe for fast or precise footwork.
